What this topic is

Fractions, decimals, and percents on the SSAT Upper Quantitative (Math) section covers converting among those forms and using them in short word problems.

A student has to find a percent of a quantity, such as a dollar discount, recover a whole when given a fraction of it, and add or subtract fractions to find a remaining distance or amount. Questions usually appear as brief story problems with five answer choices that mix the correct result with nearby traps: treating a discount as the sale price, reversing a fraction-of-a-number setup, or adding when the leftover part is needed.

Choices are typically whole numbers or simple fractions.

Question 1Easier

Maya ran 38\dfrac{3}{8} mile and then walked until she had traveled 12\dfrac{1}{2} mile in all. How far did she walk?

Show answer

Answer: B — 18\dfrac{1}{8}

1238=4838=18\dfrac{1}{2}-\dfrac{3}{8}=\dfrac{4}{8}-\dfrac{3}{8}=\dfrac{1}{8} mile.

Question 2Easier

Question 3Easier

18 is 35\dfrac{3}{5} of what number?

Show answer
